RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday that freshman RayQuan Taylor, of the men’s basketball team, is the Message Envy Student-Athlete of the Week.
Taylor, originally from Montgomery, Alabama, averaged 11.0 points and 7.5 rebounds last week for the Vaqueros.
Taylor led the Vaqueros with 16 points and six rebounds against Texas Southern at Bert Ogden Arena on Tuesday before posting six points and nine rebounds in a win over UTSA on Friday.
Last week, Taylor was also named the Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week after recording his first-career double-double with a career-high 19 rebounds and 11 points.
The 19 rebounds are the highest single-game total for the program since Jan. 19, 2002, when Marcus Quinn had 19 at home against Gardner-Webb.
Taylor has played in all 12 games this season while averaging 7.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per game while shooting 57.6% from the floor.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Southwestern Adventist at the UTRGV Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
